The Making of the Korea Southeast U.S. Chamber of Commerce
Recognition of the need for a bridge between Atlanta's numerous Korean organizations and the local business community was an important motivation in the birth of the Southeast U.S. Korean Chamber of Commerce, according to a John Hemby, the organization's founding president. In a video interview with Global Atlanta, Mr. Hemby recalled the chamber's early supporters including the Coca-Cola Co.; Georgia Power Co. for which he worked; Georgia Pacific LLC, and the former Citizens and Southern Bank. The then-Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, now the Georgia Department of Economic Development, was focused primarily on developing relations with Canada and European countries including Germany, France and the Netherlands.
"But the wave of Japanese investments in Georgia following YKK Corp.'s investment in Macon in the early 1970s, followed by Indonesia and Thailand, and there really was no investment from Korea at that time, but we wanted to start building the relationships, " he said. Mr. Hemby said it was clear that Korea started being considered more seriously because of its efforts to become a global player like Japan and because of the large Korean-American population in the state. "We knew that some day they would want to invest but it took years and years to get it off the ground," he said.
In 1991, the Korea-Southeast US Chamber of Commerce (KSEUSCC) was founded. Once launched, it also benefited from the support of the Korean Consulate General based in Atlanta and military leaders who had served in Korea and later settled in Georgia.
In 2016, it re-branded as Southeast U.S. Korean Chamber of Commerce (SEUSKCC).

한미동남부 상공회의소 설립배경
한미동남부 상공회의소는 아틀란타의 많은 한국 회사들과 지역 비지니스 커뮤니티간의 교량역활의 필요성이 대두됨으로써 초대 회장인 죤 헴비에 의해서 설립이 되었습니다. 글로벌 아틀란타의 인터뷰 비디오에서 볼 수 있듯이, 미스터 헴비는 그가 일했던 코카콜라사, 조지아 파워사, 조지아 패서픽사, 그리고 시티즌 은행의 창립자들을 중심으로 상공회의소의 초기 지원자들을 모집하였습니다.
당시 조지아 상공 관광부 (현 조지아 경제개발부)는 캐나다와 독일, 프랑스, 네덜랜드 등을 포함하는 유럽 국가들과의 발전관계에 주로 촛점을 맞추고 있었습니다. 그러나 1970년대 초에 일본의 투자 움직임이 본격화되면서 특히 메이컨 시에 와이 케이 케이사가 투자를 시작하였고 인도네시아 및 태국등이 이를 따랐으나, 한국은 투자가 없었습니다. 그 당시 미스터 헴비는 "우리는 한국과의 관계를 세우고 싶습니다. 한국은 일본과 같이 국제시장 개척에 노력을 하고 있고 또한 조지아주의 많은 한국계 미국인의 인구 증가를 고려 시 더욱 진지하게 한국과 관계를 맺고 싶습니다." 라고 언급하였습니다. 또한 "우리는 그동안 한국 및 한국업체의 투자 및 협력 관계가 이제 현실화 되어야 합니다." 라고 하였습니다.
따라서 상공회의소는 1991년에 설립이 되었으며, 아틀란타 소재의 한국 총 영사와 한국에서 군장교로 근무하고 향후 아틀란타에 정착한 분들의 지원으로 설립하게 되었습니다.
